Travel Game Ideas

With these travel game ideas and a little prior planning you can keep the kids entertained for the entire trip.

Whenever I travel with my son I have him help me fill his backpack with the activities that we are going to bring for him. He is in charge of carrying his backpack during the trip.

Getting the kids involved helps build their sense of pride and they feel special having the responsibility of their own luggage.

Some of the things that we pack into his backpack are:

  • activity books

  • pencils, crayons or washable markers

  • healthy snacks

  • A few of his favorite small toys

A portable DVD player is also great - just make sure you bring along earphones so you don't disturb other people around you.

Hand held electronic games can really keep a child occupied. Even better if the games are educational. If you buy a brand new game before a long trip your child will have something new and exciting to hold their attention longer.

Traveling by Car

A few things you can do to make your next driving trip a little more enjoyable for your little ones are:

  • Get each child a lap desk. This will give them a place to work on their activity books, coloring, story writing or whatever else they might be doing.

  • Purchase an Automotive Back Seat Organizer automotive back seat organizerto keep all of things organized and within reach.

  • Plan to make frequent stops. When you are traveling with children you cannot expect them to sit still for long periods of time without getting impatient. Giving them plenty of opportunities to get out of the car, run around a little bit and use the bathroom might make your trip a little longer but it will make it a lot more relaxing.

Travel Game Ideas

A great way to keep your kids entertained is with travel games. There are a lot of games they can play that only require a little bit of imagination. These games are so fun you can get involved and make the trip more entertaining for everyone.

  • I spy. One person picks an object visible to all players. For example, if they choose the car's windshield they would say "I spy with my little eye something that begin with W." All other players then take turns making guesses. The person who guesses correctly thinks of a new object for the others to guess.

  • The alphabet game. Each player tries to find words on road signs that begin with each letter of the alphabet, in order. The first person to get to Z wins.

  • Travel BINGO. Give each player a bingo card and stickers to mark their squares. Whenever an object on the bingo card is spotted, a sticker gets placed on that square. The first person to get BINGO wins.

  • The license plate game. Players can work together or against each other to find a license plate from each of the 50 states. A fun way to do this would be to get some state maps and stickers. Place a sticker on the state when you have spotted that license plate. See if you can fill the map by the time you reach your destination.

I hope these travel game ideas will help make your next road trip fun and memorable.
