Tips to Organize an Art Classroom

I have a very small art classroom teaching space and have up to 35 students per class in the teaching space. Do you have suggestions for maintaining the paper flow for a drawing and painting space?

Organizing an Art Classroom
by: Tracy

Maintaining the paper flow in an art classroom would be difficult since there is bound to be a lot of paper being used. Without knowing your specific needs, it will be difficult to come up with the perfect solution but I do have some ideas that might help to get your creative juices flowing and help you find the perfect storage solution for your needs.

1. Make sure that you are using the limited amount of space that you do have in the most efficient way. See if you can create more space by consolidating other supplies, getting rid of old or unused supplies and using stackable storage containers to maximize space. This will allow you to create more usable space for drawing and painting projects.

2. Be sure that you are using all of your vertical space. Can you add cabinets or shelving all the way up to the ceiling to maximize the use of vertical space? Can you neatly stack some storage bins on top of existing cabinets to free up space inside the cabinets?

3. If you need a place to let in-process painting projects dry before storing them, try using clothespins clipped over wire coat hangers. You can run a "clothesline" between two walls, high enough so that it would be completely overhead. Use the clothespins to clip the project to the hanger and hang it on the line. This is a great way to take advantage of vertical space.

4. If you need a place to store in-process projects that do not need drying in between class times, try laying all of the projects from one class on top of each other and then rolling them. Use a cardboard sleeve, like you would get a poster in, to store an entire class's projects together. This will take up much less space than storing each child's project individually.

I hope this ideas help to give you a jumping off point.
