Organizing the Bedroom

by Jessica
(Bath, PA,USA)

Hi I share a bedroom with my son. I have the master bedroom but I find it hard to keep this room in order.

I am about to take my son's crib out and replace it with a toddler bed so I'm losing the storage under the crib. I have a queen size bed, a large entertainment center, my son's changing table/dresser and another dresser for my son. I also have a double-door closet, my desk and end table. I have a storage shelf behind the door that holds all my sons things like bibs, towels and misc. items.

I just don't know if there is anything I can do to make more space in this room. Is there a certain way to arrange things? I'm at my wits end. Please help!!!

Organizing a Shared Bedroom
by: Tracy

This is a great question and I am sure that it is one that many people will benefit from. Thank you for asking it.

It sounds like your son is still very young and we all know that young ones require a lot of "stuff." It also sounds like you are off to a great start with all of the storage spaces you already have - dressers, changing tables, closet space and storage shelving. You should have no problem working with the amount of storage you already have available to you.

The most important thing that you can do is declutter constantly and consistently. Holding on to anything that no longer fits or is no longer age-appropriate will only mean that you will be using valuable storage space for things that you no longer need.

One thing that I do is to keep a plastic storage bin on the floor of my son's closet. Whenever I realize that he has outgrown an article of clothing, it does not go back into the closet. Instead it goes into the storage bin. When the bin is full I make a list of the contents and immediately donate it to charity. The bin then goes back into his closet empty to start all over again.

In addition to consistently getting rid of items that are no longer being used, you will want to be especially careful about the amount of "new stuff" that you allow in. When you have limited storage space, it becomes more important to limit your "stuff" to the amount of space you have to store it. That becomes especially important with the holiday quickly approaching.

So, declutter often, don't allow excess "stuff" in and make the most of the space you have available.
