Organizing Bills & Paperwork.

I wanted to ask if I could scan all my bills, receipts, etc. into my computer and then shred them?

Would it still be legal to use scanned copies for any taxes, legal or other requirements?

I am in Canada, so please use Canadian laws for reference to your response.

Scanning Bills & Paperwork
by: Tracy

Excellent question, Phil. Scanning receipts and other important paperwork is an excellent way to declutter your home and still keep all of those important papers that you may need later.

In fact, there is a product called NeatReceipts made specifically for that purpose.

Of course, if you begin scanning all of your paperwork you will want to develop a folder system for your computer to categorize the documents that you scan so that you can find what you need easily and your computer does not become cluttered with scanned documents.

According to the FAQ on uneat.ca, a website that sells the NeatReceipts scanner in Canada, Revenue Canada does allow the use of digital receipts.

Of course, if you have any concerns at all I would recommend that you consult with a tax attorney.
