A little a day goes a long way!
Deep cleaning aside, there are several things that can cause your home to look messy:
- toys or other items out of place and on the floors
- dishes in the sink or on the counters
- laundry piled up
These are probably the biggest offenders.
The first step is to do a clean sweep through the house. Clear your clutter, put everything away and start with a clean slate. Really organize your house.
Need help getting started? Follow my room-by-room guide. I recommend you start with your master bedroom because waking up every morning in a clean, well-organized room will put you in the right state of mind to get the rest of your house looking that way.

The next step to organize your house is to begin a new routine of small, daily chores to continually keep the cleaning cycle going.
Promise yourself that you will never spend another entire weekend cleaning when you should be out enjoying life.
Here is what I did:
I really took some time to think about my daily schedule. It didn't take long to realize that there were some pockets of unused time that I could fill with a few small chores.
5 minutes in the morning before I wake my son up for school is all it takes to sort and throw a load of laundry into the washer.
If I ask my husband to put it in the dryer when he gets home it is ready to be folded and put away before I go to bed that night.
I no longer do laundry on the weekends because I keep up with it throughout the week.
Trust me, I know what it's like to be tired at the end of a long, busy day and not feel like washing the dishes after dinner.
I also know what it feels like to be mortified when an unexpected visitor drops by and my kitchen sink is full of dirty dishes.
I have learned that taking the 10 minutes to clean up the dishes is far less painful than the alternative.
Make a rule for yourself to never leave a room empty-handed.
As you are walking through the living room on your way to the bedroom, pick up anything that you see laying around that needs to be put away in the bedroom and bring it with you. This is an amazing way to organize your house without even realizing that you are doing it!
I put a large basket in my living room for all of my son's toys. Each night we put the toys that have made their way into the living room in the basket. When the basket gets full we carry the whole thing down to the play room and put them away.
Enlist the help of your family.
Don't let yourself be the slave of your home. Explain to all members of your family that you are going to keep your house organized. Tell them that the reward for all of you will be more free time on the weekends to go out and have fun!
Make a chore chart for your kids and provide a small reward every week if they accomplish all of their goals.
Take the time to think about your schedule. Are you using your time wisely? Can you find 10 minutes to get a jump start on organization?
