Organize Your Bedroom

Site Build It!
Why should you organize your bedroom?

Many people neglect the private spaces in their homes, thinking that since nobody will ever see those spaces, it doesn't really matter whether or not they are neat and organized.

This could not be more wrong. It does matter...to you!

Your master bedroom should be your peaceful haven. It should be the place you can go at the end of a long day to unwind, relax and rejuvenate.

You will not be able to find peace if your bedroom is hidden beneath piles of clutter!

Be kind to yourself. Give yourself the peaceful haven that you need by keeping your private space organized.

If you can go to bed every night feeling good about your surroundings, you will wake up the next morning ready to tackle the next room. Here is what you need to do to organize your bedroom.

Step One

Strip your bed and throw the sheets into the washing machine. There is nothing more refreshing than the smell of clean sheets when you slip under the covers after a long busy day. Remake your bed with fresh sheets.

Step Two

Remove all dirty laundry from the room and place it near the washing machine. If you have a laundry hamper in your bedroom, empty it. You will feel much more organized starting fresh with an empty hamper.

Sort one load to go into the washer when the bed sheets are done. When you hear the washing machine finish its cycle, take a break from the bedroom to move the laundry along. Keep doing this until all of the laundry from your master bedroom has been washed, dried, folded and put away.

Step Three

If you have any clean clothes laying around that have not been folded and put away do that now.

Step Four

Take a look around your bedroom and grab anything that belongs in another room in the house. Move these items to the appropriate room.

Don't worry about putting them away right now - we'll take care of that when we get to organizing that room. The object, at this point, is to organize your bedroom by removing all unnecessary items.

Step Five

Take a look around your bedroom for any trash or recycling (like piles of newspapers or magazines next to your bed) and dispose of them accordingly. If you have a wastebasket in your bedroom, empty it.

Step Six

Take a careful look around your bedroom for clutter. This means anything from books that you have already read to knick knacks that you don't really like or need. Move all of these items to Clutter Central.

Step Seven

Attack your closet - and I do mean attack! Be ruthless. If you have not worn it in 6 months move it to Clutter Central.

If you come across an item that you are feeling borderline about move it to Clutter Central. You will have the opportunity to make final decisions on these items later. For now, get it out of your closet. The feeling that you get when your closet is clean, neat and organized, might just help you make the decision whether or not to keep those borderline items.

If you have anything other than clothing, shoes or accessories stored in your master bedroom closet move them to Clutter Central for later sorting. Remember, the goal is to organize your bedroom and turn it into the peaceful sanctuary you deserve - remove anything that does not belong in a master bedroom.

Step Eight

Now that you have all of the clutter removed, the laundry done and the closet cleaned out, give master bedroom a thorough cleaning.

  • Take window curtains down and throw them in the dryer to remove dust
  • Wash the windows and blinds
  • Vacuum, including using the crevice attachment to get into the corners and along the walls and use the extension attachment to clear dust and cobwebs from the ceiling
  • Dust all surfaces, headboard, footboards, and knick knacks

  • Wash the overhead light fixture and ceiling fan blades
Step Nine

Finish the laundry (this means washing, drying, folding and putting away).

Organize Your Bedroom - Daily Maintenance

Now that you have taken the time to organize your bedroom, let's talk about what you can do to keep it that way. Here are some rules to follow:

  • If you have children make a new household rule that absolutely no toys are allowed in the master bedroom - this is your space, stand your ground.

  • Take the time to make your bed every morning.

  • Open your window blinds every morning and let the sun shine in! Sunshine will make your nice, clean room feel warm and cozy. You will grow to love that feeling and you will be more likely to keep your room clean.

  • Be sure to wash your bed sheets at least once per week.

  • If you have a laundry hamper in your bedroom, make sure you keep it under control. Try to get into the habit of doing at least one load of laundry every day.

  • If you have a habit of reading in your bedroom, whether it be newspapers, books or magazines, keep a small storage bin under your bed. Keep only your current project on your nightstand. Once you are finished with it, place it in the storage bin. When the storage bin gets full, it's time to dispose of the contents - recycle newspapers and magazines and consider donating used books to your local public library.

  • Vacuum and dust thoroughly at least once each week.

  • If you find that you gradually start to slip and your master bedroom begins to look cluttered again, simply refer back to How to Organize Your Bedroom and start the process again. Hopefully, each time you have to do a massive overhaul you will find it a little easier to maintain the routine.
