Making Use of Unused Space in a Laundry Room

by Nedra Green
(Texas )

I have my laundry room under the stairs. This is an older house and all of this was in place when I moved in. Anyhow, I have some dead space that I would like to utilize and make use of but I'm not quite sure what I can implement.

The space is sort of awkward in size as it comes out in an L shape...the long part of the L measures 13"W X 18"L and 38-45"H. then the _ of the L measures 12"W X 29"L and 38-45"H.

I'm not certain if shelving would be needed. A table form rack would work. Regardless, I feel confident that I could make do of the space...I'm just not certain what would work.

Making Use of Unused Space in a Laundry Room
by: Tracy

Well, this is certainly a very interesting question!

I must admit, it is a little tricky to answer without fully understanding what the space looks like, but I will give you some suggestions that I hope will spark your thoughts and allow you to make the most efficient use of the space that you have.

First, if the unused space goes from the floor to the ceiling you can actually turn it into two separate zones, putting something that you will use more frequently like a drying rack or folding surface on the bottom, with shelves above for storage of less frequently used items.

If, however, the unused space is above your washer and dryer, for instance, your options would be a little more limited to storage solutions that would fit above your appliances and still be accessible...shelving, baskets or cabinets, for example.

Also, keep in mind that you do not have to limit the use of that space to laundry-related options. If your under-the-staircase laundry room is located near your kitchen, you could add storage that will allow you to keep extra food or small kitchen appliances.f

If your laundry room is located near your dining room, perhaps some shelving with baskets to hold extra table linens would be a good idea.

The key is to identify an area where you have a need for extra space and then think about how you could turn the unused space that you have into the perfect solution for the area where you have the need.
