Home Organization Meets a Newborn Baby

(Tips to Organize Life)

Yes, even a self-proclaimed home organization expert has an embarrassing moment to share.

The year was 2000. My son was three months old. It was a Friday and my beautiful little boy was to be baptized on Sunday. I awoke very early that morning to the sounds of a very cranky baby and the crankiness persisted throughout the day. If you are a parent or have ever cared for a very young infant, I'm sure you can relate.

It was one of those days when there was nothing I could do to soothe my baby boy. He wouldn't sleep, he wouldn't eat, he didn't need to be changed, he just wanted to cry and he demanded my constant attention.

As with most new mothers, my house work had fallen behind while I was adapting to caring for an infant.

We had family coming in from out of town to celebrate the baptism and I was feeling a little stressed, knowing that I had to get my house in order for the company we were about to host. My husband's Grandmother drove in from out-of-state. She was staying at my in-laws' house for the weekend, but the suspense got the better of her and she decided to stop by, unannounced, to meet her brand new Great Grandson on her way into town.

It was 3:00 in the afternoon. My husband was due home from work any minute and I was waiting, eagerly, for some help. As I sat in the nursery, rocking my crying son, still wearing my pajamas, with dirty bibs and burb cloths surrounding me, a pile of dirty dishes in the kitchen sink, an unmade bed and an overflowing laundry hamper in the bedroom, I heard the front door open. My relief quickly turned to panic as I heard two voices coming from living room.

I was immediately mortified. I am an organized person! Nobody was ever supposed to see my home in such disorganization!

Fortunately for me, Nana was a wonderful woman. She smiled sweetly as she walked into the room and saw the panic in my eyes. She said "Honey, give me that baby and you go and do what you need to do." I did just that, but the moment that I heard her voice in the living room of my completely disorganized home has stuck with me for years as my home organization most embarrassing moment.

Newborns!!! NEW
by: Anonymous

Oh you poor dear! I think after having a baby(I've had 4) you put a lot of expectations on yourself and you want to be superwoman! That is the worst possible time for people to turn up unannounced.

Good on you. I would have locked the door and hidden in a cupboard as I am so proud and would never like anyone to see me disorganized!

Expect the unexpected NEW
by: Sandie

The key to this story was that your baby boy got to visit with his great-grandmother. All else was happenstance!! I am sure that you eventually got your house in order.

Even Better... NEW
by: Debbie

I'm sure as the voice of home organization, expectations for you are even higher, even your own expectations.

As a new mother in a similar state, the most wonderful gift my friend gave me was to see the mess, see me trying to learn to be a new mother and superwoman.... and she came and cleaned for me.

She washed all the dishes, cleaned the kitchen, tidied up what she could in the main rooms of the house, even cleaned the bathroom. She said, "You relax and enjoy your baby. Or just sleep. I'll take care of this." She even made a one pot dinner on the stove to just ladle out for dinner when the time came.

To this day, it is one of the top 4 most wonderful things anyone has ever done for me.
