How to Start Organizing Your House
by: Tracy

You are not alone. It is very common to feel overwhelmed by disorganization. When you feel overwhelmed it is hard to know where to begin or to even muster up the motivation to attempt anything.

The important thing for you will be to change your mindset. You have to accept the fact that you will not be able to get your entire home organized in one day....you may not even be able to do it in a weekend or even a week. As long as you take small steps each and every day toward the ultimate goal of organization, you will get there!

You also have to give yourself permission to feel proud of small accomplishments. Your pride will make you feel better. When you feel better you will be more motivated to continue. This cycle will repeat itself, making it easier for you to reach your goal.

Here are a couple of suggestions of ways that you can take small steps toward achieving big results...

1. Use the timer method.

Pick a room to start in. Set a timer for 15 minutes. Spend that 15 minutes organizing the room you have chosen....throw away trash, start a recycle box, start a garage sale or donation box, return misplaced items to their rightful homes, etc. When the timer sounds, walk away. Even if you feel like you are on a roll, it is important to stop when the timer sounds. Take a break....for 15 minutes or for the rest of the day, whatever you feel you need. When you are ready, come back for another timed 15 minutes. Forcing yourself to take breaks will prevent you from becoming overwhelmed.

2. Use the One Task Per Day Method.

Choose a task for that day....throwing out trash, collecting items for a garage sale or donation to charity, filling a recycle box...whatever task you are in the mood for, it doesn't matter what you pick. Let's say, for example, you decide to start a garage sale box. Grab a box, set a timer for 15 minutes, carry your box from room to room throughout your house and quickly fill it with items that you know you do not want, need, use or have the space for. When the timer sounds, you are done. Choose a different task for the next day and repeat the process.

To really see success you may have to get ruthless with yourself. A few rules to keep in mind are...

1. You are only allowed to keep as much stuff as you have the space to store.

2. If you haven't used it in the last 6 months, get rid of it.

3. Don't allow yourself to be guilted into living with clutter. If your sister gave you a vase that you know you will never use, don't keep it just because your sister gave it to you. The people who love you want you to be happy, not surrounded by clutter.

So, what are you going to do today to start working toward your goal?
