Grocery Shopping Tips

Taking the time to get organized before heading off to the grocery store has many benefits.

These grocery shopping tips will show you how to create a shopping list to ensure that you get everything you need as well as how to save money and still feed your family healthy, nutritious meals.

Organizing your Grocery List

I enjoy a trip to the supermarket. Most people think I'm crazy, but it's true. Feeding my family makes me feel good and I know that without the groceries I select that would not be possible.

Once you have completed your menu planning it's time to focus on your shopping list. Grocery shopping with a list is a smart idea for many reasons.

  • It helps prevent impulse purchases. Buy what is on your list and nothing else, with the one exception of stocking your pantry.

  • It helps to ensure that you have everything you need all week long.

  • It saves time by eliminating multiple trips to the store throughout the week.

  • It saves time in the grocery store because you know exactly what you need and you do not have to wander around wondering what to buy.

So how do you create a grocery list? Well that is a matter of personal preference. Many people like to plan their lists according to the aisles in their supermarket. I like to plan my list according to meals - I find it a little more logical.

I think about what my family eats for breakfast and write those things down. I move on to lunch, dinner, snacks, beverages, household products and finally toiletries and I'm done.

If you are menu planning, the best way to start your grocery list is by writing down the ingredients you will need for each meal that you plan. Once your meals are complete, move on and finish your list in the way that makes the most sense to you.

Grocery Time Savers

These are some grocery shopping tips that should become part of your shopping routine. They will help save you time all throughout the week.

While you prepare your shopping list:

Clean out your refrigerator. While you are checking your fridge to see what you need to restock, grab everything that has passed its prime and get rid of it. This way you will be putting your fresh new groceries into a clean refrigerator every week and you will be eliminating clutter from inside your refrigerator which will save you time when you clean it.

When you get home from the store:

Wash, clean and prep anything that you can immediately after unpacking all of your groceries. For instance:

  • Wash fresh herbs so they are ready to use throughout the week. Wrap them in paper towel to keep the moisture away.

  • Wash and/or cut up fresh fruit so it is ready to eat.

  • Cut, slice or chop anything that you can. If you are making meal kits, pre-chop anything that needs to go in them.

  • Portion your items. If you bought the five pound family pack of chicken breasts, break it down into individual servings before storing.

Taking the extra ten or twenty minutes to add these grocery shopping tips onto your regular routine can save you so much more time throughout the week.

Throughout the week:

Maintain your grocery list. It can really be a huge time saver if you keep a shopping list posted in your kitchen and ask everyone in the family to write down items as they get used up.

If you do this you will have less work to do when it comes to finalizing your list on shopping day.

Organize Coupons

If you clip coupons, whether you get them from your local newspaper, an online coupon service or your store's website, keep them organized so you are ready to save money when shopping day comes around.

The best way to organize coupons is with a Grocery Coupon Organizercoupon organizer that enables you to sort your coupons by category. Look for an organizer that has a pocket for the coupons you intend to use during your current shopping trip.

  • As you write your shopping list check your coupon organizer to see if you have a coupon you can use for each item. If so, pull the coupon out and put it in the pocket for your current trip. Make a notation on your list that you have a coupon for that product.

  • As you sort through your coupons to find the ones you will be using, check expiration dates. If you come across a coupon that is about to expire and you do not have that item on your list it might be a good idea to purchase the item anyway if it is a good deal and you know you will use the item.

  • When you are at the store and come to an item that you see a coupon notation for, check the coupon to be sure you are purchasing the correct variety and amount of that product.

These grocery shopping tips for coupons will help keep you organized and save you money.

How to Save on Groceries

You can really save a lot of money in the grocery store and still get everything you need to feed your family. Use these grocery shopping tips each time you shop and watch your savings add up.

  • Stock up on items you use regularly when they go on sale.

  • Be careful when it comes to purchasing items that you do not normally use just because they are on sale for a good price. If you wind up disliking the item, your purchase turns out to be a waste of money rather than a savings.

  • Compare prices. The most expensive items are usually the ones right at eye level. Look up and down for less expensive varieties. Comparison shopping can really add up the savings.

  • Don't be a name brand snob. When it comes to groceries you don't always get what you pay for, but you do pay for big companies' advertising expenses. Try the store brand - you may find that you like it even better.

  • Clip coupons and find out what your store's policy is with regard to doubling coupons to be sure you can take advantage of the extra savings.

  • If your store offers a free savings card be sure to sign up for it. Remember to present the card at the register each time you shop for additional savings.

  • Shop from a list to avoid buying things you don't need.

I hope that these grocery shopping tips will help you to save time and start feeling good about cooking for your family.
