Organize Your Funeral Plan

Nobody wants to think about their own death, but do you want to think about your family struggling to try to plan a funeral amidst their grief?

Taking the time to organize your funeral plan is one of the most loving things you can do for your family.

Here is a checklist of steps you can take now.

  • Make sure your estate plan documents are finalized and up to date.

  • Decide whether you would prefer to be cremated or buried and make sure your family is aware of your wishes.

  • If you would prefer to be cremated, purchase an urn for your ashes. Be sure your family knows where you keep it. Write down any wishes you may have regarding your ashes and keep the note with the urn.

  • If you would prefer to be buried, contact the cemetery of your choosing to find out about pre-paid funeral arrangements. You should be able to choose your burial plot and pre-pay for your headstone.

  • Contact the funeral home of your choosing to find out about pre-paid services they may offer and what is included for the money you spend.

Once you have your plan in place, be sure to keep all related documents filed with your vital records. Be sure the folder is clearly labeled and that your family is aware of where they can find these documents when they are needed.
