Childrens Clothing

Hi I have so many clothes given to us, I certainly do not have to buy any... I am also such a hoarder that I feel the need to keep it all. How many t-shirts, pants etc. does one child need?

Storing Hand-Me-Downs
by: Tracy

First, let me point out how lucky you are to be given so many clothes for your child. I was also very lucky. When my son was born I was given bags and bags of clothing from friends and family members with older boys. In fact, we were given so much that my husband and I didn't have to purchase a winter coat for our son until he was about five years old!

The first thing that I did when I was given hand-me-down clothing was to sort through every piece. If I didn't care for it, if it was stained badly enough that I knew I would never put it on my son or if it was too worn for my liking I donated it to charity.

I sorted the items that I wanted to keep into plastic storage bins that I labeled on the outside by size. I kept the storage bins on the floor and the top shelf of my son's closet. You could also keep them in your basement, attic, garage or storage room.

It is such a blessing to have larger sized clothing ready for your children. Kids have growth spurts at very unexpected times. If you get your child dressed in an outfit that they just wore one week ago and all of a sudden it doesn't fit, you know that you have clothes on hand and you do not have to run out to the store to spend money you might not have.

You have to change your mindset about these generously given hand-me-downs, though. You cannot let them overtake your life or make you feel guilty. The giver of these clothes did not intend to burden you by giving these clothes to you!

The key is to be sensible about it. Only keep what you know you will use and get rid of the rest...whether you give them back to the original owner, to somebody else who you think can use them, or to donate them.
