Now, I'll admit that when I first saw rule one I thought to myself "Sure, wouldn't it be nice if everybody could do that, but how realistic is that for so many people who are struggling to make ends meet?"

I discovered, after personally using the program, that it is much more realistic than you might think.

How to Make a Budget With YNAB

Simply start by entering your starting bank balances into the register section of the budget planning software. You may even be able to use the convenient import feature.

Once that is done, start creating categories in the budget section and deciding how many of your dollars you want to allocate to each category. You can add to the basic categories that come with the program to tailor your budget to your specific needs, like...

• Bills you pay every month
• Bills you pay less frequently than every month
• Purchases you want to save for
• Savings and investments

From there it's just a matter of entering all incoming and outgoing transactions into your YNAB register and assigning each transaction to a budget category. If you check your budget often throughout the month, you can't help but stay on budget.
