August 2006

Monthly Motivation

Whether you think you CAN or you think you CAN'T, you're right.

Monthly Organization Tip

It's August and the kids are out of school. It's the perfect time to go through their closets, remove all the clothes they have outgrown and make room for their new school wardrobes.

Money Saving Tip

During the Summer months garage sales are in abundance. Keep your eyes open for childrens' clothing. You'd be surprised at how many like-new items you can find! Even if you find some items that are not in perfect condition, use them for play clothes. Encouraging your kids to change their clothes when they come home from school will extend the life of stuff that you spend more money on.

Recipe of the Month

I love to cook, but the perfect omlette has always escaped me. I cannot seem to get the eggs fluffy and prevent them from browning on the bottom while I wait for the top to cook. Here is a great solution that I have discovered:

Omlettes in a Bag

  • Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil
  • Place two eggs, shredded cheese and any other pre-cooked ingredients that you like into a quart-sized Ziploc brand freezer bag (make sure you use this one because it is thick and sturdy enough to withstand the boiling water)
  • Squeeze the bag gently to break up the eggs and mix them into the other ingredients
  • Drop the sealed bag into the boiling water for 13 minutes
  • Carefully remove the bag from the water, open it up onto a plate and you have the perfect omlette
  • These are great to bring camping. Just make up the bags before you leave home, pack them in your cooler and use them whenever you're ready.

    Enjoy!

    Entertaining Idea

Thow a backyard beach party - even if you don't leave anywhere near the beach.

  • Purchase an inexpensive inflatable pool (unless, of course, you have a backyard swimming pool). and fill it with water.
  • Purchase an inexpensive plastic sandbox - or make one out of wood. Fill it with sand and lots of fun sand toys.
  • Spread several beach blankets out on the lawn for picnics.
  • Invite your guests to wear their favorite beach attire and have them over for a barbecue - beach style.
  • Fun centerpiece idea: Fill colorful plastic sand pails with sand. Place some seashells on top and insert pinwheels. You'll have a quick, easy and festive centerpiece for your patio table.

Great dessert for the kids: Buckets of mud. Make a chocolate cake from your favorite boxed mix. After it cools, crumble it into small, clean, sand pails so that it looks like dirt. Mix in some gummy worms and gummy bugs. Give each kid a small shovel instead of a spoon and let them dig through the "dirt" for their dessert.
